Driver killed as high winds blow lorry from bridge
A 35-year-old lorry driver was killed this afternoon when his vehicle was blown off Derry's Foyle Bridge by high winds.
His vehicle left the bridge and landed on the riverbank after falling more than one hundred feet.
Another HGV driver was reported to be trapped in his cab for a time after his vehicle was overturned by high winds also in Derry. A number of vehicles were involved and drivers have been urged to avoid the area.
With driving conditions expected to become more hazardous, motorists are being advised to drive with “extreme caution" and only travel tonight if it is absolutely necessary.
A Met Office has warned that gusts of up to 90mph capable of causing structural damage are forecast across all parts of the province this evening.
The A20 Newtownards to Portaferry road was closed between Newtownards and Greyabbey and several coastal roads are under water as higher than usual tides threatened to inundate stretches of road on Tuesday afternoon.
Meanwhile, NIE has warned homeowners and businesses to be prepared for the worst.
Robin Greer, NIE's Communications Manager, said: "Our latest weather forecasts predict severe winds over the next 24 hours. If there is any damage to our network from severe weather, we will already be in position to get customers back on supply as quickly as humanly possible consistent with safety, and to keep customers regularly updated and informed.
“We are particularly keen to stress our regular safety message that on no account should anyone ever approach a broken pole or electricity line.”
NIE customers requiring assistance or wishing to report a fault should contact the Customer Helpline on 08457 643 643.
A number of ferry sailings to and from the province have been cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions and flights are also affected. Intending passengers should contact their ferry operator or the airport for details.

Operation Journal road checks hit law breakers
Around 500 vehicles were stopped during an hour long multi-agency vehicle checkpoint (VCP) in Belfast yesterday. Under the auspices of the Organised Crime Task Force, the operation, codenamed 'Operation Journal', was set up to detect use of illegal fuel and other infringements by road users.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for strong winds throughout Northern Ireland. The warning comes into place at 1am on Wednesday, 24 January, until 2pm. Gusts of up to 50 to 60mph are expected. The high winds may affect public transport services and delays are expected.
