Pensioner treated for shock following robbery

A pensioner has been treated for shock after four masked men robbed his house in Co Armagh early this morning.

The victim, who is believed to be in his 70s, was in the kitchen of the house in Main Street in the village of Acton, near Pontzpass, when four masked men broke in at around 12.30am and threatened him.

The gang searched the house taking a wallet and a sum of cash before fleeing.

Ulster Unionist MLA Danny Kennedy slammed as “heartless” those behind the incident.

“This type of attack on the most vulnerable in our society is despicable and evil,” he said.

“It is important that the low life who carried out this vile deed are caught and brought to justice as quickly as possible. The legal process must come down hard on anyone who puts the lives of others are risk by such a callous, low action.”

Fellow UUP councillor Robert Turner said the entire Poyntzpass community was “shocked and horrified” by the robbery.

“This was a callous act against a well respected member of the Acton community and his friends and neighbours are angry and alarmed.

“All right-thinking people cannot help but feel utter contempt for those who acted with such cowardice. Hopefully they will be apprehended quickly.”

Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them on 028 9065 0222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
