Report points to better future for Sandy Row
A report on how public services to the Sandy Row community in Belfast can be improved was unveiled today by Minister for Social Development John Spellar.
Speaking at the Sandy Row community centre on Tuesday, the Minister admitted that government policies and services for people living in deprived Protestant working class areas such as Sandy Row were not as effective as they should be.
“To look into why this is, I set up a task force of decision makers from across Government departments in April 2004,” Mr Spellar said. “They have been working closely with the local community and their report is a valuable start on the road to making things better.
“It is absolutely essential that local communities and their representatives have their voices heard and that they actively engage with those providing services to make sure that these meet their needs effectively and efficiently.”
The Sandy Row report follows research by a small team of civil servants, based in the area, who looked in detail at the delivery and effectiveness of public services.
“This report is especially valuable as it is based on detailed work with the local community to identify the barriers and issues they see as creating greatest difficulty for them,” the Minister said.
“It will provide the basis for engagement with both the local community and statutory providers to bring about the required improvements.”

Trouble flares in Protestant Sandy Row area at weekend
Police were attacked with blast bombs during a second night of rioting in Belfast. A car and a minibus were set alight in Monday's disturbances in the mainly Protestant Sandy Row area. This followed disturbances on Sunday in the same area when a shop front was damaged after three cars were set on fire.

Minister announces Sandy Row progress
Social Development Minister David Hanson has announced further progress in his department’s work to help the Sandy Row community in south Belfast. The Minister said he was determined to ensure that the Sandy Row report, which was published in January by a team of civil servants working in the area, will be implemented as soon as possible.

Armed Men Rob Shop In Sandy Row Area
Police have launched an investigation following an armed robbery at a shop in the Sandy Row area in Belfast on Saturday. Two men, armed with knives, entered the premises at around 6.45pm. One man stole a quantity of cigarettes and money from the till, while the other man stood at the door.

Man Arrested After Bonfire Set Alight Weeks Early
A man has been arrested after an eleventh night bonfire was set alight in Belfast. Two fire appliances were used to put out the blaze at Wellwood Street in the Sandy Row area on Thursday morning. Hope Street Opens To Two Way Traffic
Belfast’s Hope Street is to be opened to two-way traffic from Sunday evening. The Roads Service has said the modifications to the city centre street will create an additional northbound route for traffic on Great Victoria Street via Hope Street, Sandy Row, Durham Street and College Square North.
