Co Antrim firm fined following construction site death
A Co Antrim building firm have been prosecuted following the death of a construction worker at a site in Coleraine in 2001.
J. Kennedy and Co (Contractors) Ltd were fined £25,000 following the incident in which during a lifting operation a bale of steel reinforcing mesh fell on top of two workers at a building site in Coleraine.
Gerry McIvor, a 49-year construction worker, died as a result of the incident while a second worker received serious injuries.
The prosecution followed the investigation of the incident, which occurred during the construction of the Diamond Centre in Coleraine. The company entered a plea of guilty to two breaches of health and safety legislation and was fined a total of £25,000. The self-employed driver of the crane on site, Desmond Quigley, pleaded guilty to one breach of health and safety legislation and was fined £10,000.
Following the hearing, Malcolm Downey of the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland said: “This tragic incident could easily have been prevented. The area below the lifting operation should have been cordoned off to prevent workers from entering the danger zone. Also, slingers involved in lifting operations should always be properly trained.”
