Minister announces additional £10m to fight waste

Over £10 million has been allocated to Northern Ireland’s 26 district councils with the express aim of combating waste across the province.

Minister for the Environment Angela Smith said everyone needed to “Reduce, Re-use and Recycle” in order to tackle the scourge of waste.

“We are already seeing progress in our fight against waste,” the Minister said. “But success can only come if there is partnership and commitment from Government, District Councils and the general public.

“It is vitally important that we continue to make progress towards meeting the recycling targets contained in the Waste Management Strategy. The targets are challenging and the funding I have announced today will help meet costs of the infrastructure to enable us all to meet these targets. I continue to be impressed with the progress Councils are making.”

The £10 million Grant Scheme will help fund District Councils remit to meet the requirements of the Northern Ireland Waste Management Strategy.
