Partnership to tackle flags issue launched
A multi agency partnership involving the PSNI, Housing Executive and several government bodies has been launched to tackle the issue of flags flying in public areas.
The main aim of the new initiative, which was launched in Belfast on Monday, is to work proactively with communities, “to address the removal of flags and emblems from arterial routes and town centres and the removal of all paramilitary flags and displays”.
It also seeks to control displays of flags and emblems in particular areas – for example, interfaces, places of worship, schools and hospitals.
Assistant Chief Constables Duncan McCausland and Peter Sheridan who have responsibility for Northern Ireland's Urban and Rural Regions welcomed the partnership approach.
In a joint statement they said: "The issue of the display of flags here is an emotive one. The use of flags in instances such as a celebration of festivity is normally not an issue, however the display of flags to mark out geographical areas or to promote sectarianism or intimidation is wholly unacceptable in a peaceful and tolerant society."
NIO Minister Ian Pearson added: "If we are serious about moving to a normal society, which is the objective of A Shared Future, then clear and positive action needs to be taken to reclaim our town, city centres and arterial routes.
“This protocol signifies that the PSNI, Government and agencies are committed to acting in accord to eliminate once and for all this scourge on society."

The party said the the practice has had a 'significant cost' to Northern Ireland society. East Belfast MLA Chris Lyttle revealed the document – entitled 'Celebration, Not Demarcation' – in a bid to help resolve the issue.

Flags discussions 'constructive and positive'
Assistant Chief Constable Duncan McCausland has described a meeting with the SDLP over the issue of contentious flags as “constructive and positive”. The meeting, which took place on Tuesday, was arranged after south Belfast MP Alistair McDonnell hit out at loyalist flags being put up in mixed areas in his constituency.

UUP Disciplines Member Over Flag Comments
The Ulster Unionist Party has disciplined one of its members for comments made regarding the flag dispute at Belfast City Hall. Party leader Mike Nesbitt, has claimed Basil McCrea has done "enormous damage". The move follows Mr McCrea’s comments that there should be all-party talks to resolve the flags issue.

Call For IRA Flags To Be Removed Immediately
The erection of IRA flags in west Belfast has been condemned. The flags, which are of D Company of the Belfast IRA's 2nd Battalion, were put up in the Millfield area, over the weekend. Alliance MLA Stewart Dickson is calling for the flags to be removed "immediately".
