Four men released in 1974 murder investigation

Four men arrested in connection with the murder of a Co Tyrone businessman over 30 years ago have been released without charge.

Patrick Kelly, a nationalist member of Omagh District Council, was shot dead in July 1974 when he was on his way home after locking up a bar.

The four men who were arrested in their homes on Tuesday were questioned in Antrim. However, two were released early on Wednesday, followed by the remaining two men later on Wednesday evening.

The 33-year-old victim was shot on the Badoney Road as he drove to his home at Golan on 24 July 1974.

The Ulster Freedom Fighters (UFF) claimed responsibility for the murder at the time, however no-one has been charged with causing his death.

Mr Kelly’s family want an independent inquiry into his murder following allegations of collusion between the killers and the security forces.
