Armagh restoration wins design excellence award
The restoration of the Mall in Armagh city has won a top award for design excellence in Northern Ireland.
Created in the 18th Century, the park gradually fell into disrepair in the 1990s, however recent renovation work carried out by Belfast-based Alastair Coey Architects resulted in Thursday’s award at the Civic Trust National Awards gala ceremony in Brighton.
Commenting on the success, Ulster Unionist MLA Danny Kennedy said that the renovation project was a shining example of how “sympathetic modern planning and design can attain the highest achievements”.
“The project was undertaken with professionalism and enthusiasm, culminating in an outstanding result which blends flawlessly with the rich architectural surroundings of the city,” Mr Kennedy said.
“The restoration has breathed new life into the Mall area and given it back to the people of the city.”
The Mall, which is at the centre of some of Armagh's most attractive features, is surrounded by elegant Georgian terraces and gothic revival buildings. It is situated near the city's observatory and was created by the Church of Ireland in 1773.
