Police appeal for more information on football riot

Police are continuing to appeal for information following Saturday’s riot which followed a local football fixture in east Belfast.

Rival fans of Linfield and Glentoran threw missiles and fought hand to hand battles with each other on the pitch before riot police arrived and restored order.

Chief Inspector Mike Ellis appealed for help in identifying those responsible and said that officers were currently examining CCTV footage of the event.

"We have CCTV footage which we're looking at and we would appeal for witnesses. I'm glad to say there has been some assistance from the public so far in identifying the perpetrators,” Inspector Ellis said.

Meanwhile, Saturday’s game between Glentoran and Crusaders, which could see the east Belfast side become league champions, is to be an all-ticket affair at Seaview.

The decision was taken fearing a repeat of last Saturday’s violence at the Oval.

Glentoran are expected to receive 3,500 tickets with 1,500 tickets available for home supporters.
