Hughes retires from international duty
Northern Ireland midfielder Michael Hughes has confirmed he is to retire from international football.
The Crystal Palace player has been told by Northern Ireland boss Lawrie Sanchez that he is no longer part of his first team plans.
Hughes, who last played for Northern Ireland in the 2-2 draw with Wales at the Millennium Stadium last September before being sent off, turned down the offer of a late call-up for a World Cup qualifying game against Poland in March.
On that occasion the 33-year-old told the Irish FA he did not want to risk injury as Palace had a vital relegation game against Middlesbrough three days later.
Hughes, who is a fans' favourite among the Northern Ireland faithful, has won 71 caps for his country after making his debut against Denmark in 1991.
International colleague Roy Carroll, meanwhile, has been released by Manchester United on Friday.
The Fermanagh born goalkeeper had been stalling on signing a new deal with Alex Ferguson’s men in recent months, however that decision looks to have backfired as he finds himself on the way out of Old Trafford and on the look out for a new club.
Northern Ireland’s next fixture is against Germany at Windsor Park on June 4th as part of the IFA’s 125th anniversary celebrations.
