Legislation targets imitation gun crimes
Tough new legislation to combat crime involving air guns and imitation firearms has been introduced into Northern Ireland.
The Firearms (Amendment) (Northern Ireland) Order 2005 was passed in Parliament on Thursday and will become law in September.
Security Minister Shaun Woodward said the new legislation would enable the police to deal “much more effectively with the menace posed by air gun and imitation firearm related crime”.
“This Order adds a particularly dangerous air gun to the list of prohibited weapons and also equips the police with the means to challenge and prosecute those people who carry air guns or imitation firearms for criminal purposes or to intimidate others,” Mr Woodward said.
The new Order makes it an offence to have an air gun, including the so called soft air or BB guns, whether loaded or not, in a public place without lawful authority or reasonable excuse.
The offence is punishable with a sentence of 12 months imprisonment or a fine of £5000 or both.
