Young boy treated for severe burns in car explosion

A five-year-old boy has been treated in hospital for severe burns after the petrol tank of a burning car exploded in Londonderry on Monday.

Fire crews were called to Temple Park in Galliagh at about 10pm on Monday following reports of a burning car however the vehicle's fuel tank exploded before they arrived, engulfing Michael McLaughlin.

He was immediately taken to Altnagelvin Hospital with burns to his hands and face and was later transferred to the Royal Hospitals in Belfast. His condition is described as "serious".

A spokesperson for the Fire Service said that a number of children had been around the vehicle shortly before it exploded.

"Early indications are that the fuel tank exploded during the course of the fire and engulfed the child," the spokesperson said.

It is thought the car had been used as a runaround vehicle - an untaxed or insured car.
