Enniskillen town centre to get facelift
Enniskillen is to get a major facelift after the Department for Social Development (DSD) unveiled plans to give the town centre's Eden Street a new lease of life.
As part of the redevelopment plans, the existing Roads Service pay and display car park could be transformed into a split level retail development with either office space or apartments and parking.
Social Development Minister David Hanson said: "This site is very close to Enniskillen's main shopping area and therefore is very important to the overall development of the town centre. It has the potential to create a natural gateway from the Erneside Shopping Centre and Translink Bus Station to High Street and Townhall Street.
"As Eden Street is within a conservation area, any future development must be sympathetic to Enniskillen's historic character while also meeting the modern demands of retailers and customers."
The new project aims to help consolidate the work already undertaken in the town in recent years with Roads Service, the Planning Service and Fermanagh District Council.
A £1.2 million Environmental Improvement Scheme is due to be completed in January 2006 which is being used to improve the appearance of the town centre including the addition of granite paving, new seating and street lighting.
Eden Street Car Park is situated off Wellington Road and has 156 spaces. It offers 110 metres of potential retail frontage on 4,400 square metres of land currently owned by the Department for Regional Development.

The Department for Regional Development will start work on a number of junction improvements in Belfast city centre next week. The improvements on Grosvenor Road/Durham Street and Hope Street/Great Victoria Street are part of the Belfast On The Move Transport Masterplan which will give higher priority to public transport, pedestrians and cyclists.
