Belfast marks Trafalgar bi-centenary
Belfast is to formally mark the 200th anniversary of one of the world’s most famous sea battles.
Belfast City Council and the Belfast Harbour Commissioners will mark the bicentenary of Lord Nelson’s victory at the battle of Trafalgar with a ceremonial tree planting of an oak tree on Friday, at the site of Belfast’s first harbour in Clarendon Dock.
The simple ceremony, led by the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Wallace Browne, is one of a series of events throughout the UK that will take place to mark the anniversary of the battle, which saw the final defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte’s sea forces.
About one-third of the men who sailed with the British fleet came from across Ireland.
“This event is an opportunity for Belfast to mark not only its strong naval heritage but to celebrate this important historical date a lasting way,” said the Lord Mayor.
Frank Cushnahan, Chairman of the Belfast Harbour Commissioners, who are hosting the ceremony, added: “Two hundred years ago, Nelson’s victory secured the freedom of the seas, an achievement which helped Belfast to become one of the busiest ports in these islands. It is fitting therefore that the Port of Belfast helps commemorate Trafalgar’s legacy.”
A commemorative event is also to be held in Killyleagh, Co Down, at around 6.30pm however officials have not yet released the name of the principal guest.

BELFAST BAR FINED IN VODKA SUBSTITUTION CASE
THE Garrick Bar in Chichester Street, Belfast, has been fined £3,000 plus costs, following charges brought by the Trading Standards Service, under the Trade Marks Act 1994. The charges were in relation to the substitution of Smirnoff vodka with another brand of vodka.

Heavy Snow Closes Over 80 Schools
Over 80 schools across Northern Ireland have been closed as the heavy snow continues to cause disruption on Tuesday morning. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, as the snow is continuing to affect many roads. Areas which have been majorly disrupted include Lisburn, Castlereagh and Carryduff.
