Ballycastle to get quarter of a million pound facelift

Ballycastle's commercial heart is to get a facelift worth over a quarter of a million pounds, it was announced today.

Funded by the Department for Social Development (DSD), the Department for Regional Development (DRD) and Moyle District Council, the £334,000 investment will be spent on new kerbing and Caithness granite paving, improved crossing points and new period street lighting to enhance and preserve the historic appearance of the area. These improvements will complete Balllycastle's new look, complementing the work carried out previously by DSD at the Diamond, Castle Street, North Street and the Quay Road playing fields.

Welcoming the start of the work, Minister for Social Development David Hanson said: "This scheme is another milestone in the renovation of Ballycastle and will see much needed improvements made to the physical appearance of the town. These improvements will make Ballycastle more appealing to tourists who see it as a gateway to the Glens of Antrim and will benefit those living in the town.

"I believe that this scheme will be the catalyst for further developments in Ballycastle and look forward to seeing the work completed early next year."

The scheme was originally scheduled to begin in January 2005 but was deferred to allow a comprehensive Water Service scheme to replace the Water mains and Sewage system.

Work on the scheme began last week and is scheduled to be completed at the end of March 2006.
