Nun suffers dislocated shoulder during mugging

An elderly nun has suffered a dislocated shoulder after being mugged in Londonderry at the weekend.

The 79-year-old, who was struck by the mugger in Pump Street, had her handbag stolen as well as a sum of money.

She lay on the ground for about ten minutes before a passer-by noticed her and called an ambulance.

Elsewhere in the city, a 41-year-old woman has suffered slash wounds to her hand and chest during an attack in the St Eithnes Park area on Saturday.

Shortly after 2.30am, the victim disturbed two males outside her home who were attempting to steal her car. When she went to intervene she was held by one male and attacked by the other.

It is thought that a razor blade may have been used during the attack. A similar item has been recovered by police near the scene and removed for forensic examination.

The woman’s husband tried to chase the culprits away from the scene and although he collapsed, he recovered a short time later. He did not need hospital treatment.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who can assist them in any way, to contact police at Strand Road on 0845 600 8000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
