Detectives probe loyalist victim's past

Glasgow police say that they do not believe the murder of Northern Ireland loyalist Lindsay Robb is linked to paramilitary groups.

Mr Robb, 38, was stabbed to death on New Year's eve outside shops in the Ruchazie area in the east of the city in what police described as a frenzied attack.

Detectives said that Mr Robb's connections with the Loyalist Volunteer Force and Ulster Volunteer Force had been an area of interest in the inquiry, but they are keeping an open mind on the motive for the killing.

Mr Robb, a father of two, had moved to Scotland following his release from prison six years ago.

A leading figure in the Progressive Unionist Party, he was convicted in 1995 for his part in a gun running operation for which he received a ten-year sentence.

Released under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement in 1999, he married and took up residence in Scotland.

Police are studying CCTV footage and have appealed for any witnesses to the attack to contact detectives.
