Suspected puppy farm discovered in County Down

Animal welfare officers have discovered 100 dogs in what is believed to be a puppy farm in the Katesbridge area of County Down.

The animals were found during a joint operation between the USPCA and the PSNI.

A spokesman for the USPCA said: "We believe that this significant operation has helped break up a puppy farm.

"Both the police and ourselves are trying to establish who owns the dogs."

The dogs are understood to be of various ages and breeds, ranging from pedigrees such as Rottweilers, Boxers, Jack Russells and terriers, and although the dogs were not emaciated, they were living in what has been described as "appalling conditions".

The spokesman added: "The puppies have been taken to various locations and are currently being examined by vets."

The find comes in the wake of a kitten being injured by a crossbow bolt in what is thought to have been a deliberate attack in County Fermanagh.

The kitten was found in a severely shocked state on the Craghan Road in Ballinamallard last week and vets could not begin to treat the animal's injuries until severe swelling was first aleviated.

While the kitten, named Lucky, lost an eye in the incident it is expected to recover from its injuries.
