Morrisons to cut 1,600 jobs
Supermarket chain Morrisons has announced that it is cutting 1,600 jobs with the closure of two depots.
The company announced that it would close the two depots at Aylesford in Kent and in Bristol, because it had been left with too many distribution centres, since taking over Safeway in a £3 billion deal in March 2004.
The news follows the announcement of the closure of another depot in Warrington, Cheshire in December, with the loss of another 700 jobs.
In a statement, Morrisons said: "We are aiming to minimise redundancies as far as possible and will be talking about alternative roles within Morrisons."
The takeover of Safeway transformed Morrisons into the fourth-biggest food retailer in the UK. However, it has also led to a series of profit warnings.
