Investigation underway at Invest NI

Police are investigating a report involving Invest Northern Ireland, the government's economic development agency, which has led to the suspension of two members of staff.

The initial investigation by Invest NI examined the activities of 28 organisations, which are contracted to carry out various business initiatives on behalf of the company.

A spokesperson for the investment body said the report revealed areas of concern, centred around administrative control and potential conflicts of interest. But it was stressed that the suspensions were purely a "precautionary measure" and did not imply any improper actions by staff.

The findings have also been passed onto the NI Audit Office, as the spending of public funds was involved, and it has also informed the NIO.

It is understood most of the concern has been raised over contracts dating back to times before LEDU and the Industrial Development Board were merged to form Invest NI.

The spokesperson declined further comment as the investigation was ongoing.
