Mallusk postal workers join strike

Around 40 postal workers in the Royal Mail sorting office in Mallusk, Newtownabbey, have walked out in support of their striking colleagues in Belfast.

Some of the staff also tried to prevent vehicles from leaving the County Antrim depot to make deliveries.

A spokesperson for Royal Mail has said that management will be meeting staff in a bid to prevent more postal workers joining in with the action.

On Tuesday, over 200 Royal Mail employees at the Tomb Street depot went on an unofficial strike in protest over disciplinary procedures.

Since then, no mail has been delivered to homes in north, south or west Belfast, however the east of the city has remained unaffected.

Royal Mail has said that deliveries throughout the rest of Northern Ireland will not be disrupted, however, a representative from the Communications Workers Union, has said that this is not the case and if the disputes are not sorted, it could affect the rest of the province.

The CWU have also said that its members will not return to work until the issue has been resolved.

Yesterday, staff in Belfast said that they would return to work on Saturday on a temporary basis to deliver 11+ results to pupils.
