Antrim man jailed for part in 1989 Osnabruck bombing

A German court has handed down a six year custodial sentence to a County Antrim man who pleaded guilty to charges relating to the bombing of a British Army barracks in Osnabruck in 1989.

Leonard Joseph Hardy, 45, from Antrim, was charged by German federal prosecutors with attempted murder and explosives charges in relation to the attack on the base in Osnabruck, 17 years ago.

A civilian employee at the Quebec barracks in the British Army base surprised two bombers and although a device exploded causing serious damage no one was injured in the June 19, 1989 attack.

Arrested in the Spanish resort of Torremolinos in August 2005, Hardy fled to the Republic of Ireland. He was later extradited to Germany.

In 1995, also in Germany, four people were convicted on charges relating to the attack.
