Homes evacuated on fears of gas explosion
Police in County Londonderry have had to evacuate a number of houses and close a primary school near a blaze due to the possibility of a gas explosion.
The fire started in a shed on the Deerpark Road in Bellaghy, close to acetylene gas containers this morning. One of the cylinders later exploded.
While fire fighters brought the blaze under control, concerns remain about another acetylene cylinder on the premises.
A spokesperson for the fire service said that acetylene cylinders had been known to explode several hours after a fire.
Police sealed off the area on Friday and an adjacent road will remain closed as a precautionary measure until at least Saturday morning. A nearby primary school was also closed over safety fears.
Diversions around the area have been put in place and motorists are advised to find alternative routes or face possible delays in the area.

Over 800 young people from schools in Lisburn and Castlereagh attended a hard-hitting road safety message at the PSNI Road Safe Roadshow on 19 November. The roadshow, supported by AXA Insurance and the Northern Ireland Road Safety Partnership, aims to educate young drivers about the dangers of irresponsible driving.

Pedestrian Dies Following Road Traffic Collision Ikn West Belfast
A female pedestrian in her 70s has tragically died following a road traffic collision in west Belfast on Saturday, 9th November. The incident occurred on Hannahstown Hill shortly after 6:50pm when two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle. Emergency services attended the scene, and the injured pedestrians were taken to hospital.
