Portfolios for two new NIO ministers

The Northern Ireland Secretary of State has announced that two new ministers have joined the Northern Ireland Office direct rule team.

Announcing the ministerial portfolios of Paul Goggins and Maria Eagle, who replace Shaun Woodward and Angela Smith, Mr Hain said: “The new Northern Ireland Office ministerial team will continue to work tirelessly to restore devolution to Northern Ireland while delivering radical reforms across the public service.”

Maria Eagle will take responsibility for the Department for Employment and Learning (DEL), Department of Education (DE), the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) and Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL).

Paul Goggins takes on Security, Policing, Prisons and Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS).

Mr Hain said: “While there has been a change of personnel, the work of the Northern Ireland Office continues.

“We will continue to work for the restoration of a power sharing Executive in this crucial year for the people of Northern Ireland and move forward in our radical reform agenda in health and education.

“At this crucial stage in the political process, I have decided that David Hanson will retain his Political Development portfolio and continue to work for an early return to devolved Government.

“I have asked Jeff Rooker to take personal charge of the whole programme of radical reform following the Review of Public Administration, from local government rates to the introduction of water charges.”
