NI backpacker dies in Thailand
A Londonderry family have been left stunned by the death of their son just a day after he called from Thailand to tell them that he was unwell.
It is understood that Christopher Gallagher, 23, from Shantallow had contracted a very severe form of malaria, despite taking anti-malarial drugs and being innoculated before the trip.
Mr Gallagher had been on a backpacking holiday following his graduation from university.
He had called his parents on Friday to tell them that he was ill. But on Saturday the family were shocked to receive the news that he had died.
His parents told the BBC that they thought their son knew he was seriously ill when he phoned them. But they knew that he had taken medical advice before he left on the trip and thought that he was protected.

Pedestrian Injured In Belfast Hit-and-Run
The PSNI have issued an appeal for information following a hit-and-run incident in the Botanic Avenue area of Belfast in the early hours of Thursday morning. Officers were called to the scene shortly before 1.30am after a male pedestrian was struck by a maroon Mazda. Despite being injured, the pedestrian left the area before police arrived.

Boys, 10 and 15, Questioned About Weekend Blazes
Two boys, aged 10 and 15, have been questioned by police about gorse fires in County Tyrone. The blazes were started in the Aghnagar Road area of Sixmilecross, near Omagh over the weekend. A PSNI statement said it was "extremely distressing" that those allegedly involved were so young.
