Seven remanded in custody after Ballymena drugs raid

Eleven people have appeared in Larne Magistrates Court, charged in connection with an illegal heroin network, following a police operation in the Ballymena area yesterday.

Ten men and one woman appeared in court facing 31 charges relating to heroin dealing, the dealing of Class C narcotics and the distribution of prescription drugs.

Seven of the men were remanded in custody, while the three other men and the woman were all granted bail to return to Ballymena Magistrates Court at different dates in the near future.

Fourteen people were arrested yesterday following a major police operation, codenamed 'Operation Sturge.'

Around 120 officers, including representatives from the PSNI Crime Team, the drug squad and Tactical Support Unit, were involved in the search, which targeted around 17 addresses, and was the biggest anti-drugs offensive carried out in the province in recent years.

The three other people who were also arrested yesterday were all released on bail.

One of the men will appear in court at a later date, while the other was released on bail pending further inquiries.

The woman was also released on bail pending a report being sent to the Public Prosecutions Office.
