McGuinness alleges 'spy plot' is attempt to have him killed
Martin McGuinness has today accused his enemies of claiming that he was a British spy, in a bid to have him killed.
The Sinn Fein Chief Negotiator and former IRA commander was accused of being a British agent by a former intelligence officer - Martin Ingram, and the allegation was carried last weekend by an Irish tabloid.
Since the publication, Mr McGuinness has rubbished the claims blaming the DUP of being behind the allegations in a bid to ruin the peace process.
The allegations come just two months after former Sinn Fein official-turned British agent Denis Donaldson was murdered and Mr McGuinness believes that the same fate was intended for him.
He said: "I don't have any illusions whatsoever that the people behind this are hoping that I will be killed."
Regardless of this, the Mid-Ulster MP said that his party will continue to work towards meeting the November deadline set by the government to reinstate the power-sharing Stormont executive and has vowed to vowed to get back into government with the DUP.
He said: "I'm not accusing all of the DUP of being involved in this. I am accusing a certain element within the DUP who are doing their damnedest to prevent an agreement.
"There are people within the DUP who can't bring themselves to recognise that the future will be Ian Paisley and Martin McGuinness in the Office of First and Deputy First Minister."
He concluded by saying that this is the future and those in question need to come to terms with it.
