Woman dies while laying tribute to friend

A county Tyrone woman has died after being struck by a car as she laid flowers at the spot where a friend was killed just two-days earlier.

Nellie Doherty, a pensioner from Strabane and her husband Laurence had stopped just outside Ballybofey, Co Donegal to lay a floral tribute on the spot where family friend John Barr had died in a motorcycling incident on Sunday night, when she was struck by a car.

Mrs Doherty was taken to hospital but later died form her injuries.

Her husband was also injured, however his condition is not thought to be life threatening.

West Tyrone SDLP member, Eugene McMenamin, who knew both families, said that the town of Strabane had been shocked by the double tragedy.

He said: "It's heartbreaking. The couple were laying flowers as an act of compassion for the Barr family and no words can describe the shock and sadness felt by local people."
