Man given nine-years for stabbing friend

A man who stabbed his ex-wife's lover and former friend has today received a nine-year jail term.

Brian Murray, 44, of Dhu Varren Crescent, Belfast, who admitted wounding with intent in June 2005, will also spend an additional year on probation on release.

During the trial, the court learned that Murray had armed himself with two knives, a sheath knife and a stanley knife, and waited for his former friend, Hugh Kennedy at a cash machine on the Shankill Road in north Belfast.

As the victim stood at the machine, Murray stabbed the man in the back, severing an artery, and after being pulled away by a passer by, he launched another attack with the second weapon.

The victim was taken to the Royal Victoria hospital where he had to undergo emergency life saving surgery.

Murray and his wife, Carol, separated in April 2003 after 19 years of marriage and in 2004, she formed a relationship with Mr Kennedy.

A Belfast Crown Court Judge today said that people convicted of stabbing another "can only expect a severe and condign sentence."

When the trail began last April, Murray admitted wounding his former friend with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, however the prosecution dismissed this and proceeded with a charge of attempted murder.

However, a jury acquitted him of this by a majority verdict.
