Two men die in separate stabbing incidents

Two people have been killed in separate stabbing incidents in Northern Ireland over the weekend.

Hugh McKibben, 51, of Main Street in Carrowdore died in a stabbing incident at a house on Inisharoan Court about midnight on Sunday May 5.

Four people were arrested following his murder but three have since been released on police bail. A fourth man remains in custody.

Tom Hamilton, Ulster Unionist Assemblyman for Strangford and former Mayor of Newtownards said the horrific knifing incident raised important issues on how to deal with violent crime.

“We have an underlying problem in our society with violence and that is not surprising after a thirty-year war. We need to get society weaned away from this war footing and we need to deal with violent and organised crime by tougher sentences,” he said.

In the second stabbing incident a 34-year-old man was found dead in a house on the Oldpark Road in north Belfast around 3am on Monday May 6.

The man had suffered stab wounds. Following a post-mortem examination, police said a crime was not suspected.
