NI sex offenders increase by 15%
A new report published today has revealed that the number of dangerous sex offenders living in Northern Ireland has increased by 15%, bringing the total living in the province to almost 700.
The report also stated that the greatest number of known paedophiles are based in north and south Belfast, with around ten being hunted by police at any given time for failing to notify the authorities of their new living arrangements.
Approximately 620 offenders are subject to notification requirement.
William McAuley, Strategy and Policy Co-ordinator at the NI Sex Offender Strategic Management Committee, which conducted the report, said that the authorities fear that some of the most dangerous offenders could go underground, stressing that some do go missing.
He said: "There's a number of people subject to notification requirements who have failed to notify police of a change of address.
"These people are being pursued by police.
"There's not any more than about 10 on a regular basis who would fit that category of failing to notify."
The report also included a map highlighting the number of offenders living within each council area.
Mr McAuley added: "We think there are dangers in going much further than that, if we started to identify the whereabouts of individuals."
Earlier this month, the Northern Ireland Office announced that known sex offenders were to be moved out of hostels based close to schools.
The Northern Ireland Office revealed that the decision was made to coincide with a Home Office policy change, which would affect 13 known offenders in the province.
