Security guard injured in city robbery

Police have appealed for information following the robbery of a security van in south Belfast earlier today.

It is understood that a security van was making delivery to the Ulster Bank on the Ormeau Road in the south of the city just after 11am today, when the incident happened.

A man, armed with a knife is thought to have approached the security guard as he came out of the bank, and proceeded to stab him in the arm.

The guard, who is aged in his 40s, was taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening.

It is not yet known if any cash was stolen during the attack, and police have cordoned off the area while forensic examinations of the scene are carried out.

Dr Alasdair McDonnell, SDLP MP for the area, has condemned the incident.

He said: "I condemn unreservedly this stupid robbery because of the serious damage it does to the image of Belfast and the Ormeau Road in particular.

"I would urge anybody with any titbit of information - no matter how small - to put it in the hands of the police.

"Our sympathies also go to the security guard who has been attacked and injured in this incident."

Sinn Fein MLA, Alex Maskey, said that it is very disturbing that the robbers were confident enough to carry out such an attack in broad daylight and added that everything must be done to reassure security staff that they can carry out this necessary work with the minimum of risk or threat.

Anyone who may have witnessed the robbery, or who may have any information in relation to it, are asked to contact detectives on 0845 600 8000, or anonymously on the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.
