Two arrested over County Londonderry rape

Police in County Londonderry have arrested two men in connection with a serious sexual assault at the weekend.

The victim, a 25-year-old woman, was found in a distressed condition in a lane leading to a caravan park in Ballyronan, close to the shores of Lough Neagh at around 4.30am on Sunday.

A spokesperson for the PSNI confirmed that the woman had been the victim of a serious sexual assault.

The attacker is described as being around 6 feet tall, and with a broken English accent.

He was last seen walking down the lane in the direction of the nearby Shore Road.

Inspector Eamon Foy, from the PSNI has appealed for witnesses to contact police.

He said: "This has been a traumatic incident for this young women.

"The whole community in Ballyronan have been shocked by it."

He added that a full forensic investigation is to be carried out, and proceeded to praise two men who went to the assistance of the woman.

SDLP assembly member Patsy McGlone said his thoughts were with the victim of the attack.

He continued: "But all our energies must be directed to ensuring that the person responsible is apprehended before he commits further serious crime.

"I understand the police have strong leads to work on, and they should get the help of every decent person in taking the attacker out of circulation without delay."
