The PSNI are warning the public to be vigilant after a number of stolen motor caravans were sold to unsuspecting individuals across Northern Ireland.

Police have detected a large theft and ringing network between Great Britain, Eire and Northern Ireland regarding motor homes and so far eight arrests have been made.

Commenting on the illegal operation, Superintendent Tony Weston said: "The scam is very detailed and has caught a number of people by surprise. The unsuspecting buyer has been conned into believing the vehicle they are purchasing is legitimate, as the vehicles in question are being sold with authentic documentation.

"The scam has resulted in individuals from Northern Ireland losing over £500,000, which for some, has been their life savings. To date, we have made eight arrests for handling stolen goods and the investigation is still ongoing."

Detectives have advised the public to be cautious when buying a motor caravan and look out for the following: Avoid cash payments; Be satisfied that the seller is who they say they are and are the owner of the vehicle; Do not meet the seller at the roadside/roundabout etc for convenience; If buying from a house ensure that the seller is a resident; Be cautious if there are damaged locks; Ensure you get all the original keys - check that they fit before purchase; Ensure that the purchaser completes the sellers portion of the V5 in your presence; Be cautious of vehicles advertised below the market value; If at all suspicious - do not continue with the purchase.
