Major cash boost for west Belfast travelling community
The Department for Social Development (DSD) has today announced that the travelling community in West Belfast are to receive a £50,000 cash boost.
The funding has been provided to Belfast City Council by the Department’s Belfast Regeneration Office (BRO), through the Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy.
It will provide a new portacabin, replacing current facilities on the Glen Road, Belfast, and
An Munia Tober, the leading travellers’ organisation in Northern Ireland, will be able to use the portacabin to deliver 'After Schools and Health programmes' to the travelling community in the west of the city.
Announcing the funding, Minister for Social Development David Hanson MP said: “This is a prime example of how government, statutory and community bodies can work in partnership to deliver essential services to a minority group within a Neighbourhood Renewal area.
“The provision of this new facility will enable An Munia Tober to better deliver and co-ordinate education and health programmes for the local travelling community. The programmes will target all age groups and are specifically aimed at tackling social disadvantage and addressing the needs of this minority grouping. These are key objectives of the government’s Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy.”
Other stakeholders in the project are North West Belfast Health and Social Services Trust and the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister.
