City Hall to become a ‘no parking zone’
Parking restrictions on the cobbled area directly in front of Belfast City Hall are being strictly enforced from next week.
On Monday (October 16), work begins to install bollards, to prevent vehicles parking on the cobbles.
“This is being done for the safety of the hundreds of people who use this busy area every day,” explained a Belfast City Council spokesman. “For the past century, the area directly in front of City Hall has been a popular meeting place and gathering point, and a focus for events, rallies, demonstrations and protests. However, in recent years, there has been growing concern about the number of vehicles parking on this cobbled area."
“This not only poses a threat to people’s safety, but can make access to the City Hall problematic – and is also an unattractive site at the front of Belfast’s civic centrepiece.”
The bollards can be removed by hand, so wedding cars and other essential vehicles will still be able to drive in to the City Hall grounds. It also means that event organisers can use this area with a greater degree of safety and security.
Future events and activities on the cobbled area will be managed by Belfast City Council, on behalf of the Department for Regional Development Roads Service and in conjunction with the Police Service and Belfast City Centre Management.
Anyone requiring information on the use of this area should contact 028 9027 0273.
