David Healy to head Best memorial campaign
Northern Ireland soccer hero David Healy has boosted efforts for a permanent memorial to be built in Belfast city centre to commemorate Northern Ireland footballing legend George Best.
Healy will head the new memorial trust, in a bid to gain the public's support in erecting a statue of Best in the city, almost one-year after his death.
The Leeds United star was invited to champion the campaign by Best's sister Barbara McNarry and Belfast Lord Mayor Pat McCarthy last month.
Commenting on the offer, David Healy said that it was the "opportunity of a lifetime" and urged the public to support the campaign.
The campaign is due to begin on December 11, and aims to raise funding from the Northern Ireland public in a bid to be able to build a memorial.
Earlier this year, Belfast City Airport was renamed and next month a local bank is to launch a £5 note bearing Best's image as a tribute to the soccer legend, who died on November 25 2005 from organ failure after a lengthy battle with alcoholism.
