Pensioner robbed in County Antrim

Police in County Antrim have appealed for information following the burglary of an elderly woman yesterday afternoon.

The incident happened at the pensioner's home in the Fairhill Road area of Newtownabbey, when a man called to the woman's home and offered to carry out maintenance work on the property.

The man asked for drinks and to use the woman's bathroom several times throughout the day, before making off without finishing the job or asking for payment.

A short time later, the woman discovered that a substantial amount of savings bonds and other items had been stolen.

The robber is believed to be aged in his 30s, with a tidy appearance, and was wearing jeans, a t-shirt, and had a Belfast accent.

It is understood that he may have been driving a black coloured Jeep.

Detectives investigating the robbery believe that it may be linked to a number of other similar incident in the area over the past few weeks, when a man called to houses offering to carry out plumbing, gas, or driveway work.

Anyone who may have witnessed the robbery or who may have any information in connection with it or any of the other incidents, are asked to contact police in Newtownabbey on 0845 600 8000, or anonymously on the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.
