Sinn Féin say talks at ‘critical’ stage
The importance of this week’s series of British-Irish talks aimed at breaking the logjam in the Northern Ireland peace process has been highlighted by senior members of Sinn Féin.
Speaking in Dublin, Sinn Féin party leader Gerry Adams said Thursday’s scheduled meeting between the British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern could turn out to be the most crucial meeting in the whole history of the peace process.
Mr Adams made his comments after discussions with Bertie Ahern this morning. His party colleague, Martin McGuinness, added that he believed the meeting could turn out to be one of the most significant in the past 100 years.
The power-sharing institutions at Stormont were suspended on 14 October after a row broke out over allegations of IRA intelligence gathering, including the alleged uncovering of an IRA spy ring within the Northern Ireland Office.
Before he met with Mr Ahern this morning Mr Adams warned that media reports, which he said were clearly coming from Dublin, were causing serious problems.
He said media speculation at the weekend that the IRA was about to issue a statement saying that they may stand down “was most unhelpful”.
The taoiseach is to hold talks with the SDLP leader Mark Durkan tomorrow. Later in the week, Mr Ahern will meet the Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble in London.

A former IRA leader has died at the age of 97. Billy McKee died at his home in Belfast on Tuesday, 11 June. He is believed to have joined the IRA in the 1930s. He left and joined Sinn Féin in the 1980s.
