Couple rescued from fire in West Belfast

A young couple have been rescued from a fire in a block of flats in West Belfast.

It is understood the fire began in a first-floor flat at Carrigart Avenue, in Lenadoon at around 2am yesterday morning.

People living in nearby apartments were evacuated, while the couple – a 23-year-old man and his girlfriend, aged 19 were trapped in their top-story maisonette.

Fire fighters used a hydraulic platform to take them to safety, and they were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

Area commander Jim McCallum told reporters the couple were extremely lucky to have survived the blaze.

“Obviously there was quite a bit of heat and smoke coming up from the fire which they were exposed to,” he said.

“Fortunately we were able to talk to them on the telephone to reassure them and tell them how to keep safe, while we got our equipment to work.”
