Portadown man denies shooting toddler

A Portadown man has appeared in court today over the shooting of a toddler in Co Armagh.

Dennis Berry, 34, a labourer from Garvaghy Park, Portadown, was at Craigavon Magistrates Court this morning to face charges of grievous bodily harm with intent, aggravated burglary and having a gun in suspicious circumstance. He denies the charges.

Mr Berry was arrested yesterday lunchtime in relation to a shooting at St John's Court, off the Garvaghy Road in Portadown on Monday night.

At around 3.30am, a gunman entered the premises and a number of shots were then fired into the ceiling of a downstairs room. A two-and-a-half-year-old girl, who was sleeping in an upstairs bedroom at the time, received a gunshot wound to the groin.

The child was taken to the Belfast Hospital for Sick Children where she underwent surgery. Her condition is currently described as stable.

The child's father, a second man and two other children escaped injury.

Mr Berry also faces charges of assault and possession of an offensive weapon – both of which date from a warrant issued last March.
