Ships crew refuse to leave Belfast

The Filipino crew of a Panamanian-registered ship have refused to leave Belfast in a row over pay and working conditions, a union has said.

According to union Siptu, all but five of the 20 crew on board the ship are understood to have stood down.

International transport federation inspector, Ken Fleming, has claimed: “This vessel will not be sailing anywhere until crew grievances are addressed and anyone wishing to be repatriated is allowed to go home.”

Port authorities in Belfast are due to inspect the Naxos, owned by Korean Jinyang Shipping, later today, after claims have been made that it leaks in heavy seas and that there are pay arrears issues.
