Conference to move loyalism away from crime
PSNI Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde is set to meet with UDA political representatives today to discuss how to direct loyalist paramilitaries away from crime.
More than 100 delegates will attend the day-long conference which will be chaired by former Ulster Bank chairman Sir George Quigley.
It is understood senior clergymen will also be in attendance to discuss how best to spend the £1.2 million that has been given to a project to help transform the UDA.
Frankie Gallagher of the Ulster Political Research Group, advisers to the UDA, said the work being done in the communities would make a difference.
“Our influences at the interface areas, where we have managed to keep tensions calm, has helped play its part in the process. We have been working hard on the ground over the years to free our communities from criminality and there has been some success.”
He continued: “But there are still challenges that need to be addressed and today’s workshop is about facing these challenges head on and working to build a new future not just for loyalist communities, but as part of a new vision for Northern Ireland.”
The event comes after Northern Ireland Minister David Hanson pledged new grants over three years to fight crime in loyalist areas.

Work Underway For Free Hospital Parking In Northern Ireland
Work has begun at several hospital sites across Northern Ireland as part of the preparations for the introduction of free car parking in May 2026. Health and Social Care Trusts have been actively preparing for the implementation of a new traffic management system since the Hospital Parking Charges Act was passed in 2022.

Regeneration in hands of local people says Hanson
Real progress is being made by local people to improve life in the mainly loyalist Tullycarnet estate, Social Development Minister David Hanson said today during a visit to the East Belfast area. Mr Hanson made the visit following the recent establishment of a high level 'Delivery Team' to address the needs of disadvantaged loyalist communities.
