Ballymena company wins contract to build Irish buses
A County Antrim coachbuilding firm has won a multi-million pound contract to supply a number of buses for an Irish Republic based company.
Ballymena’s Wright Group is set to supply single-deck city buses to Bus Eireann.
Martin Cullen, Irish Transport Minister, confirmed the news of the 11.5 Euro (£8m) contract at Wright’s premises at Galgorm.
“I believe that practical north/south co-operation can benefit us all,” he said.
“There are many areas in which we can do business to advance the economic agenda, to the advantage of the north and south. There is real potential for significant purchasing contracts to service our need for new buses.
“We are in the business of buses – and I’m delighted to see you tendering for the supply of buses in our market.”
Earlier in the year, trade union group T&G met with the minister and worker representatives from Wright’s.
Speaking before the announcement was made, Mike O’Reilly, the T&G’s Irish Regional Organiser, was optimistic of a deal being made.
He said: “This is tangible evidence that the Good Friday Agreement has beneficial effects for employment on the island of Ireland.
“It shows that an all-Ireland economic approach has benefits for everybody and threatens no-one.
“The T&G and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions have been campaigning for this type of approach to economic success for many years.”
