Land destroyed after "deliberate" fire

Two kilometres of land was destroyed when massive gorse fires swept across north Belfast’s Cavehill last night.

Six fire appliances were used at the scene to help tackle the blaze. However the remote location and the dark hampered their efforts, and more than 40 firefighters were pulled at one stage due to safety fears.

Geoff White from the Fire and Rescue Service said that: “The indications are at this stage that, from the numbers of fires and locations, that the fires were started deliberately.

“We will be carrying out further investigations and tackling the problems with other relevant agencies.”

He also revealed more than 100 calls had been made from members of the public who spotted the fire.

In the past two weeks, fire crew tackled more than 700 gorse and forest fires. No one was injured in last night’s blaze, which eventually burned itself out.
