Sinn Fein to meet with Prime Minister

Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams is set to meet Prime Minister Tony Blair at Downing Street today in preparation for power-sharing on 8 May.

Deputy First Minister in waiting, Martin McGuinness, will also be present as part of the delegation, as will Wexford Councillor John Dwyer.

It is understood Sinn Fein will discuss the recent loyalist threats to nationalists and republicans and concerns about the Independent Monitoring Commission’s role during devolution.

The party is also expected to request more funds in an attempt to boost the Executive’s budget as devolved ministers face demands to tackle under funded projects.

Sinn Fein held its first meeting with the Northern Ireland policing board on Monday.

Party members voted to support policing following a decision at a special party conference – the árdfheis - in January, which accepted policing arrangements once power-sharing is restored on 8 May.

Meanwhile, DUP leader Ian Paisley has extended an invitation to the Prime Minister to attend the opening of Stormont next week.

"I'm asking you to come and join in Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland people that part of the United Kingdom is going to have a government the same way that Wales and Scotland has had," he said.

"It is your duty as Prime Minister to be there."

Mr Blair replied, saying he would "have it well in mind".
