U2 help raise $2.4m for hurricane charity
A guitar belonging to U2’s The Edge has sold at an auction that raised $2.4 million (£1.2m) for a charity that helps those affected by Hurricane Katrina.
The Edge’s guitar, a Gibson Les Paul has been used on every tour since 1985 and was sold for $240,000 (£120,000).
The auction, organised by Julien’s Auctions, took place at the Hard Rock Café in New York City. The company, who organised the Icons of Music sale, said it was the largest selection of U2 memorabilia ever made to collectors.
Other U2 items include an autographed guitar belonging to Bono, which sold for $180,000 (£90,000), a bass guitar donated by Adam Clayton for $22,000 (£11,000) and Larry Mullen Jr’s tom-tom drum fetched $19,000 (£9,500).
The money raised from is going to Music Rising, a charity co-founded by The Edge to help replace musical instruments that were destroyed in the hurricane in New Orleans.

Compositions sought for world-renowned Derry Guitar Festival
As part of the City of Derry Guitar Festival a competition has been launched to encourage the composition of new music for guitar. Composers can submit works for guitar and electronics to compete for a £500 commission for the 2006 festival with entries having already been received from Iran, Greece, Russia, the UK and Ireland.

Three Arrested in L'Derry For Drug Offences
Police in L'Derry have arrested three people and seized drugs worth an estimated £600. The arrests were made following a proactive policing operation in the city. On Monday, 18 November, officers observed suspicious behaviour from a 39-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman in the Strand Road area.

Plans For £3m Strabane Footbridge Shelved
Plans to build a £3m footbridge in Strabane have been postponed because the council could not find a contractor in time. Meanwhile Cycle charity Sustrans has withdrawn their £650K contribution for the bridge as their agreement was that they would help fund the structure if it was built by March 2013.
