Belfast maternity unit closed due to infection
A neo-natal unit has been temporarily closed after three premature babies picked up a life-threatening infection at a Belfast hospital.
A spokesperson for the Royal Maternity Hospital said that the infants are now stable and the unit is currently closed to new admissions.
It is understood the multi-resistant enterobacter infection can affect vulnerable babies in special care units.
The hospital spokesperson said: “The facility has been closed to new admissions and we don’t know for how long. They are taking specialist advice from the infection control team.”
Strong antibiotics have been used to treat the babies, who have been separated from the healthy infants and specially trained nurses are closely monitoring them.
There are 21 units in the maternity unit, with six of them in intensive care and 11 in specialist care who have not contracted the bacteria.

Belfast City Hospital officials have said that the closure of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is the result of two patients contracting a multi-resistant bacterial infection. A statement from the City Hospital last night said the unit should re-open under the guidance of the hospital’s Infection Control Team within the next 36 hours.

No New Cases Discovered At Maternity Unit
No new cases have been found after 24 babies were tested at Belfast's Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital for signs of an active infection of Pseudomonas. A deep clean of the hospital where three babies died was completed at the weekend, according to officials.
