West Belfast company aims to double production
A leading west Belfast glass reinforced plastic and plastic tank manufacturer is aiming to double its production capabilities thanks to the acquisition of a new filament winding machine.
The company, which has been situated in an interface area of west Belfast since 1992, made their latest purchase thanks to a £300,000 grant from the Special EU Support Programme for Peace and Reconciliation.
Commenting on the funding during a visit to the company's headquarters, Economy Minister, Ian Pearson said: "Given the Company’s interface location, it is particularly appropriate that around £300,000 came from the Special EU Support Programme for Peace and Reconciliation.
“This unique EU funding Programme is assisting Northern Ireland in becoming a peaceful and stable society. The European Union has shown its clear and continued commitment to maintaining the momentum for peace and reconciliation and indeed, we are currently implementing the new Peace II Programme.”
John McKinney, Chief Executive of the Special EU Programmes Body which is the Managing Authority for the Peace Programme, added: “The funding that Silotank has received from the EU Peace I Programme not only helps an innovative firm to develop. It also shows that building peace and reconciliation must also be about building the economic life of the community.”
As well as their new acquisition the company, which manufactures and supplies its products throughout the UK, Ireland, Europe and as far a field as Malaysia, has invested a further £500,000 in a filament winding plant and technology, pioneered by the US Space Industry.

Peace People Return To Belfast
A veteran of many 'peace' rallies in the 1970s - Mairead Corrigan Maguire - one of the original anti-NI Troubles 'Peace People', has addressed a large Belfast crowd to condemn the actions of the Israeli government in Gaza. She was speaking at the weekend when the City Hall demonstration was held against the Israeli attack on the Gaza area.

Cross border school and youth cooperation to receive major boost
Education Minister, Martin McGuinness, and Dr Michael Woods TD, Minister for Education and Science in Dublin, have announced EU funding of over five million euro to support cross-border school and youth cooperation projects. Around three-quarters of the funding will be provided under the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation (PEACE II).

£1b Peace Plus Programme Approved
