Newry Murder Accused Refused Bail
The 19-year-old accused of killing a Newry taxi driver has been refused bail by the high court.
Michael Jason Smith from Main Avenue in Newry is accused of murdering father-of-four Stefan Loughran in a Newry housing estate on 8th February 2007.
It is alleged that Mr Loughran had confronted Mr Smith, after he had punched the victim’s 9-year-old son, when he suffered knife wounds to his stomach and back which pierced his heart and lung.
Mr Smith’s barrister said that the accused was acting in self-defence as Mr Loughran had accosted him in a confrontational manner.
Following the incident, Mr Loughran was rushed to Daisy Hill hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7.45pm.

Attempted murder accused appears in court
An alleged ram raider who was arrested after six police officers were injured in Newry, Co Down, has appeared in court today charged with attempted murder. Thomas Patrick McDonagh, of Ardcarne Park, Newry, stands accused of attempting to murder a police officer and committing three burglaries in the Newry area in the early hours of Monday morning.

Cookstown Murder Accused Appears In Court
A 45-year-old man has appeared before Omagh Magistrates' Court charged in connection with the murder of a 77-year-old woman in Cookstown, Co Tyrone. According to reports, the elderly woman is the mother of the accused. She was found murdered in her home in Ratheen Avenue in the town on Sunday 19 June. The accused was arrested at the scene.

Aloysius Hackett, 60, was a respected figure in GAA circles in Tyrone and a former chairman of St. Macartan's GAA club. He was found dead at his home on Aghindarragh Road in Augher on Friday night.
